Japan 2016: Kyoto’s Nishiki Market
I’ve got a lot of favourite places in Japan, as my friends I travelled with can attest to, but Nishiki Market ranks as one of my top culinary places to visit. Its really because this market allows you to taste and eat all the delicacies each store and stall has to offer as you walk through it. A lot of the food is grilled, fried or cooked on skewers – in Japanese we call it, kushi. Everything from squid, octopus, fish cakes, fruit and cucumbers are served on easy to eat and walk with skewers. The other specialty you will see throughout the market are vendors specializing in pickles – pickled vegetables, fish and fruit. Kyoto is famous for its tofu and as a result you will often see miso used as a pickling agent in addition to other traditional agents like sake and vinegar. Well worth the time to step away from Temple hopping for a couple of hours!
