Singapore 2016: Unique Foods
Although I was in Singapore for only a short two days, I definitely noticed that Singaporeans love their breakfast, coffee and sweets. At many of the cafe hawker stalls and cafes (like Canopy Coffee Cafe) would serve breakfast sets that would always include soft boiled eggs, coffee and toast with kava butter, so much so that it could be their national dish. And all this for usually $2-$3 Singapore dollars – food really is affordable in this country. Another dish we discovered was the Ice Kachang. A towering shaved ice dessert with a number of different toppings and syrups. This particular ice kachang at the Marina Bay Sands Rasapura Masters hawker style food court had red bean, flavoured grass jelly, palm nuts and creamed corn. For the most part, the ice kachang was sweet with a lot of different textures but I’m going to admit the creamed corn is something unique in this dish that while everything is sweet, the corn is savoury. Although combinations like prosciutto and melon or pineapple on pizza are classic sweet and savoury pairings, the creamed corn on the ice kachang dessert needs time to grow on me 🙂
