Sugar Loaf Bakery
Yesterday, on a gorgeous summer Sunday, a few friends and I decided to hit up a relatively new bakery called Sugar Loaf Bakery in an up and coming Toronto neighborhood of Riverside. A beautiful interior (the ceiling is partially lined with tin ceiling tiles) and a counter full of baked goods, cakes, breads and jams its hard to resist indulging in a few sweets. Having just had dragonboat practice, we were starving and since the bakery serves brunch we couldn’t help but order some breakfast. Trying to stay on the healthy side I went with the gluten free buckwheat galette (crepe) stuffed with eggs, tomato chutney and peameal bacon – it was just enough carbs to satisfy me but let’s be honest, I needed something sweet to end my meal! When you visit you will notice right away that this bakery takes traditional baked items and gives them a unique twist. Some of their pastries include: earl grey scones, guava stuffed croissants, cream of earl grey jars and brookies (yes, that’s a chocolate chip cookie and brownie in one). I ordered the pao de mel since I’ve never seen nor tasted anything like it. Its two bite sized spiced honey cakes with a layer of dulce de leche and covered in chocolate – oddly enough the taste reminds me of Christmas fruit cake which I actually enjoy 🙂
