Japan 2012 – Family Is Everything!

I’m back!  So I know I’ve been MIA for the last 3.5 weeks but let me tell you, my mother-daughter trip to Japan was absolutely fabulous!  I haven’t been back since 2005 but my mom hasn’t been back for almost 10 years and she was in heaven!  The primary reason for our trip was to attend a family reunion.  My mom’s siblings host a reunion every few years to celebrate the life of their parents (i.e. my grandparents).  This year was the 17th year since the passing of my grandmother and the 13th year since the passing of my grandfather – which in Japanese tradition is called “obon”.  So after visiting my grandparents “haka” (family grave), we travelled to an onsen (hot spring) and traditional ryokan (japanese bed & breakfast) near the Mt.Fuji area.

Here is some of the delicious traditional japanese foods we ate during our one night stay!

Reunion dinner table!

Poached scallop in its own shell and juices.

Individual table setting.

Fresh sashimi - squid, shrimp, tuna, etc.

Traditional Japanese breakfast - rice, fish, egg, tofu and miso soup!
